Hello
Blogging world!
Today
I got my first tattoo!! It is a handwritten tattoo of the German word “fernweh”
on the side of my left foot. I am really glad I was able to push aside my fears
about the pain and just go for it. Speaking about the pain… if I had to
describe it I would say it felt as though someone was taking a scalpel to my
foot and slicing away…OUCH. Anyways, I have been anticipating this tattoo for
some time now for several reasons. The word itself when literally translated
means “far sickness”, the opposite of home sickness, it describes one who has a
literal ache to travel and discover other countries. Not only is the tattoo a reminder of my year
abroad and all the memories I have made but it also serves as an inspiration
for what I shall do with my future. The tattoo represents my growth over the
course of my first year abroad and all that I have come to learn about people,
cultures, the world and myself. It represents my constant curiosity and longing
to see the world and be open to the people in it. It reminds me to never stop
travelling and to hold that passion close to my heart throughout the rest of my
life. The language of the tattoo is very significant because I discovered my
fernweh and love to travel while in Germany. It represents rediscovering family
roots and in doing so becoming proud of my heritage.
It’s
also a great place to have a travel tattoo because one travels by foot.
Coincidentally, throughout my travels in Europe I have taken photos of my feet
in the many cities and places I have been too. So take a look at my tattoo and
all the places my fernweh has taken me thus far!
